Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship – the Carnival Venezia – sets sail today on it’s first US-bound voyage. Except this ship has been in the water since 2019! Carnival Venezia originally said for a different Carnival brand – Costa Cruises – but increased demand for US-based cruises created a need for more Carnival-branded ships. The Carnival Venezia is just one of the recently transferred ships from Costa to Carnival (both owned by Carnival Cruise Lines) since the COVID-19 pandemic began. According to The Points Guy, “The pandemic and its aftermath hurt the Costa brand much more than the Carnival brand, in part because the Costa brand had big operations in China, where cruising shut down during the pandemic for far longer than it did in North America.”
The maiden sailing under the Carnival brand makes it’s way from Barcelona (where it underwent an entire dry-dock refurbish) to New York City where it will be based until December 2024. The 15 day cruise from Spain to the US launches late in the day on Monday May 29th, 2023.
But guess who will be on one of the first trips out of New York City? That’s right D626 Destinations! We were lucky enough to get on one of the first US-departing trips for the Carnival Venezia setting sail on June 19th, 2023. We will be traveling on the Venezia for two days as we head to the Caribbean with stops at Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, and Amber Cove. We then head back over two days to New York City.
The Carnival Venezia is keeping much of it’s Italian theming which will make it quite unique in the Carnival fleet. The ship will still feature many of the amenities and activities that Carnival is known for including – a Carnival Waterworks waterplay area and a steakhouse called Fahrenheit 555 — a signature Carnival dining location.
Other fan favorites aboard the Venezia will be a Guy Fieri-inspired Guy’s Burger Joint, Seafood Shack, Bonsai Sushi, Chef’s Table, Piano Bar 88, Pizzeria del Capitano pizza outlet, Lido Marketplace and Heroes Tribute Lounge.
