Carnival Venezia Taps Jay Leno as Godfather

If you’ve ever seen the stereo-typical depiction of someone cracking a bottle of champagne on the hull of a ship, you’ve witnessed one of the traditions of a cruise ships Godmother.

For thousands of years ships have had Godmothers. It is believed that the feminine energy brings good luck and protection for future voyages.

Carnival Cruise Line’s newest ship – the Carnival Venezia – now has a Godfather to go alongside it’s Godmother. Late-night talk show host Jay Leno will join Gan Beiye (the ship’s Godmother). Gan is the matriarch of a Chinese family who enjoyed cruising aboard Costa Cruises.

The Carnival Venezia was originally a Costa ship that was scheduled to cruise in the Chinese market. Making Gan a great fit as the Godmother. Coincidentally, Leno, a native to New Rochelle, NY and direct descendant of Italian immigrants also makes a great fit as the Godfather.

“I am truly honored to be named the godfather of Carnival Venezia. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse,” said Leno. “Carnival’s focus on FUN combined with the Italian theming of this ship is something that is truly unique. I’m also excited to have my very own cruise ship, although I think I’ll need a bigger garage!”

The D626 Destinations family will onboard the Carnival Venezia’s initial voyage out of New York City heading down to the Caribbean on a 8-night adventure. Stay up to date on all the amazing details of this new ship by following D626 Destinations on Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest.
