Cruise Contraband: 10 Things You Should Leave Ashore

  1. Illegal substances: Attempting to bring illegal drugs or substances on board is not only against cruise line policies but also against the US Federal law. Passengers are subject to strict security checks, and violating these rules can result in serious consequences. This even includes marijuana prescribed for medical purposes. It includes all products containing CBD, oils, candies, and gummies or any product containing THC.
  2. Weapons: Weapons, including firearms, knives, and other potentially dangerous items, are strictly prohibited on cruise ships. Cruise lines always have the safety of passengers and crew in mind, so bringing any weapon on board is not allowed.
  3. Candles and incense: Open flames pose a significant fire hazard on cruise ships. As a result, most cruise lines prohibit passengers from bringing candles, incense, or any other open-flame items on board. So what if I find something in port that falls under this category but want to bring it home? Most ships will allow you to “check” the item and it will be returned at the end of the cruise. Similar to the purchase of alcohol.
  4. Power strips and extension cords: Many cruise lines have restrictions on power strips and extension cords due to the risk of electrical fires. Passengers should check the specific policies of their cruise line before packing such items. There are several options that are ok, just be sure to look for “non surge” options. Tip: Bring an international adapter with you, staterooms generally have few outlets available for use. This can help maximise the items you can charge at once.
  5. Drones: Drones are often banned on cruise ships due to safety and privacy concerns. The use of drones in close proximity to a ship can pose a risk to both passengers and crew, and privacy issues may arise from the use of aerial devices. Many countries also have their own restrictions. So best to leave them at home.
  1. Large coolers or outside food: Cruise ships typically provide a variety of amazing dining options! Cruise lines may have restrictions on bringing perishable items or large quantities of food on board. Shelf-stable snacks like chips, pretzels, protein bars or any other items packaged in sealed wrappers are permitted on every major cruise line.
  2. Alcohol (in excessive amounts): While some cruise lines allow passengers to bring a limited amount of alcohol on board, always check with the cruise line. Trying to bring more than allowed will result in items be confiscated. Additionally, bringing your own alcohol to public areas or restaurants on the ship is generally not allowed. This generally applies to drinks that are pre-purchased to rooms. Tip: The drink package may no always be worth it!
  3. Hoverboards and other motorized recreational devices: Due to safety concerns, most cruise lines prohibit the use of hoverboards, Segways, and other motorized recreational devices on board. Don’t worry if you have any mobility issues cruise lines have great accommodations just be sure to tell your travel agent that you will need a mobility friendly room. Mortoized wheelchair are welcome aboard!
  4. Pets: With the exception of service animals, bringing pets on cruise ships is not allowed. If you do have a service animal be sure to talk to the cruise line and fill out any additional information for your service animal. There are specialised areas for service pets on the cruise, knowing these before you book can be helpful when choosing a stateroom.
  5. Large amounts of cash: While it’s ok too have some cash for tipping and small purchases at ports of call, carrying large sums of cash on a cruise ship can be risky. Most cruise lines encourage the use of credit cards for onboard expenses. Try prepaid cards so you have access to add to it but it is a much safer option.
