Catalina Calling: Your Ultimate Port of Call

When visiting Catalina Island via cruise ship, you’ll likely dock at the main port in Avalon, the island’s largest city and primary tourist hub. Avalon is a highly walkable destination with numerous attractions, shops, restaurants, and scenic spots within easy reach of the cruise port. Catalina Island spans approximately 22 miles in length and 8 miles in width at its widest point. It features rugged coastline, scenic hills, and valleys, with its highest point being Mount Orizaba, which rises to 2,097 feet above sea level. Keep in mind that for this cruise port you will have to take a water taxi to get to shore.

  1. Crescent Avenue: This iconic waterfront street runs along Avalon Bay and is lined with shops, restaurants, cafes, and galleries. Take a leisurely stroll along Crescent Avenue, known locally as “Front Street,” to soak up the charming atmosphere and enjoy views of the harbour. We had a lot of fun walking around the shops.
  2. Avalon Pier: Located adjacent to the cruise port, Avalon Pier offers panoramic views of the bay and surrounding hillsides. Walk to the end of the pier for stunning vistas of the ocean and Catalina’s rugged coastline. It’s also a popular spot for fishing and observing marine life.

The Descanso Beach Club offers amenities such as cabana rentals, water sports equipment, and beachside dining.

5. Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden: For nature lovers, a scenic walk or short taxi ride from the cruise port will take you to the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden, located in Avalon Canyon. Explore the beautifully landscaped gardens, learn about the island’s flora, and visit the memorial honoring William Wrigley Jr.

6. Avalon Bay Beach: Just steps away from the cruise port, Avalon Bay Beach is a convenient spot to dip your toes in the water or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the shoreline. It’s a picturesque setting with views of colorful boats bobbing in the harbor.

12. Parasailing:Soar above the island’s coastline while parasailing, enjoying breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina’s rugged terrain from high above.

Catalina has so much to offer! It is defiantly a cruise stop that I would be able to do again. I have say one of the coolest part was the boat parade. As we were getting ready to disembark there was a helicopter swooping very close to the water directing the boats heading into the marina, then they sounded a loud blast and all of the boats paraded into the marina. It was very fun to watch from the balcony or from one of the upper desk.
